Born in 1926, in Daman, India, Mario Miranda was an Indian cartoonist and painter based out of Goa. Miranda had not formally studied art but had been making sketches on different mediums since a young age. The first big breakthrough of his career came when the Illustrated Weekly of India decided to publish a few of his works, which later led to the Times of India group offering him a slot as a cartoonist in 1953.

Art critic Uma Nair says about his work “Mario’s drawings, like his signature, had a squared-off, serene quality, a frame of high and mischievous intention that suggested aspirations beyond the momentary smile most cartoons are content to induce... he created multitudes that had a collective melody and mood, his backgrounds were never in excess, always a quaint minimalism that endeared and endured-he also pressed towards the foreground an impressionist zeal that had a zing to it.” (Uma Nair , A Requiem for Mario Miranda, Times of India Blog, 12 December 2011, accessed online on 29 March 2020)

His illustrated books include Inside Goa by Manohar Malgonkar, A Family in Goa and The Open Eyes by Dom Moraes, and among his own books are Goa with Love, A Little World of Humour, Sketch Book, and Germany in Wintertime. His work has been exhibited in several countries internationally including USA, Japan, Germany, Spain and France and he has been the recipient of many national and international honours.

The artist passed away in December 2011 and is survived by his wife, Habiba and his sons, Rishad and Raul.
