Authorship has variously been attributed to John Tillotson or Joachim Hayward Stocqueler. The book has small circular blind-stamp of the Library of Arts, 106 Great Russell Street, outside lower left margin of title page (as often). Some of the book have a prospectus which mentions the full title as "The Route of the Overland Mail to India. From Southampton to India. Thirty-two plates, from drawings by Messrs. Grieve, Telbin, Absolon, Herring. Sen., D. Roberts, R.A. Weir and other eminent artists". The prospectus has the descriptive text for the plates. The book in the present lot is without the prospectus.

To be viewed on a revolving stage accompanied by commentary and music, the plates portray painted scenes that were inspired by the ports and locations visited by P&O (the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company founded in 1837) passengers during their voyages abroad.
