One of at least three known states, which vary based on the labeling found in the Kathmandu Valley. The map has a lot of information on it, like roads and military bases.

Between 1765 and 1772, the British East India Company took over Bengal, Bahar (Bihar), Oude (Oudh), and Allahabad, which had been separate states before. They forced the states to give them the right to collect taxes. This gave the merchant group political freedom over a huge area in the northeast of the subcontinent that had never been seen before and also created a favorable economic climate.

The pretty cartouche in the upper right corner shows both money and power. A bearded sea god rests his arm on the head of a bull in the cartouche. An alligator and a leopard are next to him. At right, an Indian woman holds a bowl over a kneeling man, as two other men look on.

This copperplate engraved map was made less than twenty years after British control was mostly established. The different political areas are colored by hand on it. The Ganges River cuts through a lot of the picture. Its source is somewhere in the Himalayas, which is shown (somewhat humbly) in pictorial fashion. A network of roads that is remarkably robust connects a fascinating variety of villages, landmarks, trading posts, and military fortifications, as identified by numerous toponyms. Local regions and geographic features are also identified.
