PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Mumbai

Horse figures such as the present lot are used as decorative parts of ceremonial temple chariots that carry representations of Hindu deities around the streets of the temple on festival days and auspicious occasions. This figure is made from solid teak wood, hand-carved in two parts from the centre. The figure is hollow from the inside, providing enough room for it to be used as a secret compartment to store temple jewellery. Beautiful hand-painted garlands can be seen on the horse’s crest and wheels are attached to the base of its hooves. The figure has been painted with vegetable colour and displays a wonderful patina that is testimony of it being used.
