Vasundhara Tewari Broota was born in Kolkata in 1955. She moved to Delhi at the age of 15 where she graduated from the University of Delhi, with literature as her subject, and also studied art at Triveni Kala Sangam. In 1982-1984, she was awarded a cultural scholarship by the Department of Culture, Government of India.

In 1982-1984, she was awarded a cultural scholarship by the Department of Culture, Government of India.

The artist began painting figurative works in the 1980s and made her mark with her sensitive mixed media art that explores the psycho-political implications of womanhood and the suppression of the feminine within existing social structures. Her paintings are characterized by tensions arising out of the naturalistically modeled figures and the flat pictorial space which is enriched with small focuses of tonal recessions. Through the female nude, she showcases the inner life of contemporary women. In recent works, the human figure is not depicted as the protagonist, rather it shares equal importance with the background, which alludes to the interdependence between a person’s psyche and the experience of their surroundings.

Tewari Broota held her first solo show at Shridharani Gallery, Delhi in 1980. She has since participated in international shows, such as Contemporary Indian Art, Tokyo (1984), and solo exhibitions at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai (1991) and Vadehra Art Gallery, Delhi (2007). She has also won several awards, including a silver medal at the first International Biennale, Algiers in 1987; the Sanskriti Award in 1987; and the Sahitya Kala Parishad Annual Delhi State Award in 1982 and 1987; and the Sahitya Kala Parishad in 1996.

In 1992, Tewari Broota co-directed the film Shabash Bete with her husband, artist Rameshwar Broota, which was screened at Oberhausen Short Film Festival in Germany. Her works are part of several public and private collections in India and abroad, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; the Chester and David Herwitz Collection, US; and the Masanori Fukuoka Collection, Japan, among others. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
