Sir Jagadis Chunder Bose's book The Motor Mechanism of Plants was first published in 1926, and an expanded edition was published in 1927. It is a groundbreaking work that explores the electrical and mechanical processes that occur in plants.

In the book, Bose argues that plants are not passive organisms but rather have a complex and active mechanism for responding to their environment. He demonstrates this by using his invention, the crescograph, which is a device that measures the growth and movements of plants with extreme precision. With the help of the crescograph, Bose was able to show that plants respond to various stimuli, such as light and gravity, by producing electrical and mechanical responses.

Bose's work challenged the prevailing view of plants as simple organisms without any significant capacity for movement or response to external stimuli. He also drew comparisons between the workings of plants and those of animals, suggesting that there were fundamental similarities between the two.

The Motor Mechanism of Plants is considered a seminal work in the field of plant physiology and helped to pave the way for further research into the electrical and mechanical processes that occur in plants. It is also a testament to Bose's pioneering spirit and his determination to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge.
