Deepak Sonar is an abstract artist who was born in Nashik in 1967. It was his job as a government employee that made him realise that he wanted to pursue painting as a full time career. He pursued an education in art and graduated with a diploma from the Sir J J School of Art, before being awarded a research grant scholarship by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1995.

He pursued an education in art and graduated with a diploma from the Sir J J School of Art, before being awarded a research grant scholarship by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1995.

Sonar began by painting figurative art, but as he grew as an artist, the figures from his canvases began to fade away and the background became his primary focus. The artist paints in layers, using a wiper to soften the acrylic paint that he uses, often adding nearly 35 layers within each painting. Sonar describes his art as abstract with a hint of landscape. His canvases lend themselves to different interpretations, each one teeming with emotion.

Sonar’s works are in the collections of the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Taj Group of Hotels, and Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal.
