Leopold von Orlich was a Prussian officer who sought permission to join the British Army in India for the expedition into Afghanistan. He travelled via Gibraltar, Cairo and Aden arriving in India at Bombay, and finally catching up with the British Army at Firozpur in Punjab, by which time the campaign had been successfully concluded. Olrich provides detailed accounts on the Sikhs - the First Sikh War was to break out in 1845 - meetings with Generals Pollock and Nott and various Sikh notables; a visit to Agra; a description of the Thugs and Phansigars; as well as trips to Cawnpore, Lucknow, Allahabad, Lahore, and Calcutta. Orlich eventually settled in London and was in the process of writing a History of British India when he died suddenly in 1860. It was completed by Carl. Böttger and published in Leipzig 1859-61 under the title India und sein Regierung

Orlich arrived in Lahore in January 1843 during the reign of Maharajah Sher Singh. He writes of the late Runjeet Singh, death of his son Kharak Singh and Naunihal Singh, describes in detail the Punjab and the Sikhs, Raja Dhean Singh, Fakir Azizuddin and Rani Chand Kaur, grand festivities held in Lahore and a reception for Maharajah Sher Singh.
