Hooker dedicated this work to Charles Darwin. He was a friend of Charles Darwin, and supported his theories.

With a great desire to travel and having inherited a great enthusiasm for botany from his father, Hooker was lucky to be able to indulge both passions from an early age. From 1848 to 1851, with the support of the British government, Hooker traveled throughout the eastern and central Himalayas, collecting botanical specimens and exploring areas not previously visited by Europeans. On his return was able to secure funding from the government in order to write up his journals and to catalogue the collected flora and disseminate the duplicated specimens.
