xxiii; 140 pages including 20 fine colour aquatint plates with tissue guards, each accompanied by descriptive letterpress (mostly on two leaves); contemporary full leather-bound with gilded blind stamped ornate border to the front and back boards along with the blind stamped gilt text and floral pattern along with 5 raised bands at the spine, all edges gilt

Plates are identical to those in Sir Charles D'Oyly, Costume and Customs of Modern India, London: Edward Orme, circa 1813, differing only in that the frames are washed in grey and pink instead of yellow.

Although Abbey 440 notes that the borders of the plates in the circa 1824 edition are washed in yellow, in this copy they are washed in pink and gray as in the 1813 edition.

20 attractive hand-colored aquatints presenting a fascinating view of British life in the Raj when England ruled India. Captain Thomas Williamson was a British officer who served in the British regiment in Bengal for two decades and created sketches of his time in India. He was also author of the book Oriental Field Sports. He served in Bengal and was an accomplished amateur artist.
