KG Subramanyan was deeply interested in the mural and was among the most dedicated purveyors of the form among post–Independence artists. He worked on The King of The Dark Chamber, a terracotta mural of monumental scale installed in the Rabindralaya building in Lucknow, between 1962-63, to commemorate the birth of Rabindranath Tagore.

He worked on The King of The Dark Chamber, a terracotta mural of monumental scale installed in the Rabindralaya building in Lucknow, between 1962-63, to commemorate the birth of Rabindranath Tagore.

Subramanyan, who was teaching in the Faculty of Fine Arts at M S University, Baroda at the time, invited his students to participate in creating this mural. The work, based on Tagore’s play with the same name, was of a scale that Subramanyan had not worked on before, and he ended up creating many more tiles than was required.

The individual pieces in the present lot were additional works created by Subramanyan to be incorporated in the mural, but ended up being excluded in the final stage.
