Early 20th century
Wool, natural dyes
71.65 x 55.78 in (182 x 141.7 cm)

There are black fabric patches on the back of the carpet to mark the top in case it is to be hung

Believed to be from Kerman, Iran, this beautiful handwoven Afshar carpet is composed of an asymmetric double 'mirror image reflection' of a vase filled with flowers and with scattered flowers and garlands around the vase. This is contrasted against a camel-coloured field that is framed by a set of three narrow borders containing abstract geometric scrolling vines. The carpet includes an inscription in Persian that loosely translates to January 1905, as per the Christian calendar.
