Ashutosh Bhardwaj’s acrylics and oils on canvas respond to the contemporary, cosmopolitan nature of urban India, where the artist lives and works. Drawing his metaphors from the images projected at the public through various media sources, which serve as the mouthpieces of various global sociopolitical players, the artist pairs historical and current images with geometric designs and bright colours in his works. Referring to his works, the artist says, “My interest in precise, sharp, meticulous geometry and other design references helps me to create suitable unreal abstract spaces where these clichéd images can interact.”
Born in 1981, Ashutosh Bhardwaj received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 2002. In 2004, he completed his Master’s degree in Fine Arts at the same university.
The artist’s first solo show, ‘Sleep Walker’, was held at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008. Amongst his recent group shows are 'Interlude-Venice/Kassel' at the Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; ‘Through a Glass, Darkly: Reflections on the Self Portrait’ at the Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; ‘Obscure Objects of Desire’ at Gallery OED, Kochi, in 2008; ‘Meandering Membranes’ presented by Empire Art and Shrine Gallery, New Delhi, at The Taj Bengal, Kolkata, in 2007; and ‘Asian Young Artists’, Heyri, South Korea, in 2007.
