Brother of the photojournalist T.S. Satyan, T.S. Nagarajan is amongst the pioneers of social change through the arts in India. A renowned photojournalist and a consultant photographer to UNICEF, Nagarajan has candidly captured a variety of themes ranging from people and their emotions, to their environments and surrounding landscapes. Nagarajan’s intentions have always been to create social awareness through his images. Not only does he document a situation with marksman-like precision, but also stirs up a whirlwind of emotion within the viewer, highlighting the plight of his subjects and the need for social change in India.

Some of Nagarajan’s works, which have initiated major movements of change, are his photographs on themes such as education and family planning, which have been published internationally. Nagarajan has also carried out political photo essays on the lives of Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.

Born in Mysore in 1932, Nagarajan has held several solo and group shows and received many national and international awards in photography. After working with the Government of India as a the Director of the Photo Division in the Ministry of Information for over a decade, Nagarajan decided to follow a lifelong passion, and dedicate the rest of his life to photographing interiors of century-old homes in India. The factors that contribute to the making an “Indian” home and the mindset of the individuals to live there are subjects that the photographer has been studying since.

The most recent group shows that the photographer’s works have been included in are ‘Private / Corporate IV’ at Daimler Contemporary, Berlin, in 2007; ‘My Brother’s Image’ at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Greece, in 2002; and ‘The Other Way of Seeing’ at the Museum voor Volkenkunde, Rotterdam, in 1992-93. T.S. Nagarajan’s latest book of photography focuses on ancestral and turn-of-the-century homes in various parts of India.
