"I'm interested in the connotations of the image, its political implications and the kind of ironies involved in this aspect of science and its side effects. Every era had a certain mindset which got reflected in the writing and the artworks produced by the artists of that time." - T V SANTHOSH Contemporary artist T V Santhosh is known for his hyperrealist paintings that subvert iconic or everyday images from cinema, news media, art history and popular culture, thereby turning them into critical tools of commentary on current socio-political events. In the present lot, he borrows the lower half of the famous 1553 painting The Ambassadors by the 16th century German painter Hans Holbein the Younger, which depicted French diplomats Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve in London during the Tudor period. Titling the work Two Wise Men and Their Sheep, Santhosh further adds satirical symbolic motifs to the composition-much like Holbein did in his portraits-including the addition of Dolly, the first cloned sheep (and adult mammal), and a shovel buried in dirt. According to Ranjit Hoskote, "the artist's gaze fastens upon the detail of the ambassador's feet; adapting the allegorical spirit of the original, he inserts into this frame a grave-digger's shovel and Dolly, the cloned sheep. The play of image and title assures us, bleakly, that the Magi and the scholar- diplomats have been replaced by genetic engineers and military strategists."
