L'Inde franaise was the first important French book on India.

The present lot is co-authored by Eugene Burnouf (1801-1852), a French scholar and Indologist who studied Sanskrit literature and translated a number of Hindu and Buddhist texts of note. It was among the first significant French books on India, and the two volumes collectively comprise nearly 150 hand-coloured lithographs accompanied by text, exploring deities, religious rituals and festivities, arts and crafts, costumes and dress, professions and notable personalities.
