In the late 18th century, a number of wars were fought between the Kingdom of Mysore and the British East India Company. In the fourth and final Anglo-Mysore War, the British defeated Tipu Sultan, the King of Mysore, and took indirect control of the capital by restoring power to the Wodeyar Dynasty and appointing a British commissioner. The present lot is an account of this defining battle, penned by Alexander Beatson, who claims in the preface that he has spared no labour to render [the account] as faithful and impartial a record as can possibly be given Beatson was an officer in the service of the East India Company at the time, and went on to become the Governor of St Helena from 1808 to 1813.
