GRASS-SEATED STOOL, GEORGE NAKASHIMA

Sheesham with rope
10 x 24 x 24.25 in (25.5 x 61.2 x 61.6 cm)

When I'm making something out of a piece of wood, I have a long dialogue with it, sometimes for years. I have to find my own relationship with the spirit of a tree, and pretty soon, the wood evolves as a form.
- GEORGE NAKASHIMA

George Nakashima saw furniture as an extension of the life of a tree and used the most innate characteristics of natural wood, including the burls, knots and grain, to inform his craft. Nakashima was deeply interested in the specific properties of local timbers such as teak and rosewood. The following two lots embody Nakashima's spiritual aesthetic and the unique beauty of the wood he so admired.
