Born in 1912 in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, Govind Madhav Solegaonkar was educated in Bombay and Indore, and studied at the Sir J J School of Art in Bombay. Following his initial training, Solegaonkar went on to experiment with different styles, and indigenous materials, specialising in murals, portraits and landscapes. Solegaonkar was a member of the Indore Group, active from 1934 – 1937, which included the artists N S Bendre, D J Joshi and M S Joshi. He held a number of solo and group shows throughout his career, and received many awards and honours. His works are displayed in the Rajya Sabha in New Delhi, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai, and the CSMVS Museum in Mumbai.

G M Solegaonkar passed away in 1986.
