Working with materials like paper and ink, Manisha Parekh builds up her abstract works through multiple layers that alternately cover and peel away to disclose underlying surfaces and colours. “These works have palimpsest qualities, building depth and solidity from vulnerable materials, embodying the thinking of the artist between their layers. The process of empirical thinking is carried forward as each layer is applied. Using multiples and repetition to create her abstract images, Parekh`s creative process is a labour and time intensive one. “The cyclical germination of growing forms is perhaps an appropriate metaphor for Manisha`s practice. There is continuity, coupled with evolution. A tremendous amount of work happens below the surface (unseen) and time is an essential ingredient in order to reap the full rewards of her labours” (Ibid.).
