The exposure made him more attuned to "aspects beyond his immediate experience, of total perception in which his mind or emotion played a significant part." Bendre's artistic career began at the State School of Art in Indore in 1929. Over six decades, he experimented with Cubism, Expressionism and Pointillism to express Indian themes such as birds and animals, figures, and landscapes of Indian villages. In the latter half of his career, he "gives prime importance to his visual experience, but he does not resort to naturalistic representation. He interprets it on his canvas in his own terms and offers what he has seen and enjoyed..." (Chatterji, p. 61)
