This portrait of Raja Prakash Chand (r. 1773-1790), possibly painted during his reign, shows the ruler dressed in a pink jama. He is seated against a red bolster by a white window, his left hand resting on the sill, the stem of a hookah in his right hand. Guler artists were known for their attention to detail, as seen in the precise strands of hair on the subject's beard and the careful rendering of the lattice work in the jharokha.

"Freedom from warlike preoccupations and lack of feudal ambition may have prompted Govardhan Chand (1741-1773) to lead a more cultured existence... Govardhan Chand's son Prakash [the subject in the present lot] continued this patronage, encouraging local artists to "illustrate religious and poetic themes, and to execute portraits." (Archer, Indian Miniatures, p. 131)
