This 1983 canvas, features a richly detailed peacock and his peahen-consort set against a muted pink-grey forest backdrop, perhaps cloaked in an early morning mist. A master of mood, Bendre conveys the romance and seduction of the natural world through his work. The critic Ram Chatterji explains, “[Bendre] shuns obsession, any scientific or psychological dogma. He has no message. It is not his business to preach. He only wishes to share with you the joys the world has in store.” (Bendre: The Painter and the Person, 1990, p. 61).
