In 1963 Sheikh, was a founding member of Group 1890 which included J Swaminathan and Himmat Shah. Group 1890 defied the Mumbai art scene by ideologically rejecting what they saw as the Progressives' formal dependence on the School of Paris. The group believed in an inclusive approach that looked at the ideas, practices and traditions of the urban dweller and the idioms of tribal and folk art.

The Alphabet Series was produced in the 1980s as a response to attempts at altering textbooks to reflect certain divisive political ideologies. To reclaim the alphabet, Sheikh sets down words and letters, superimposing images over them until the words became the images. The Alphabet Series redefines the alphabet, interweaving text and image, as Sheikh plays with pictograms which evoke a narrative.
