Influenced by the pre-independence Company School of Art, the traditional Kalighat Pat and the Ajanta cave paintings, Shaw's works often depict stylised portraits of the Bengali middle-class, drawing images of couples, women and men, rendering their physical characteristics in a manner which has come to be associated with the artist's flat two dimensional style. Shaw's work is simple and graceful: his draughtsmanship displays the artist's superior skills in capturing the protagonist's societal context but also his individuality. He captures the expression and demeanour of his subject with the greatest economy of line and colour, which is further underscored by his choice of medium. Executed in gouache and tempera, the smooth surface compliments the sharp and minimalist imagery. Shaw has successfully developed a unique style that renders traditional Indian formats with a modern undertone, resulting in works that are clearly located in the present yet exhibit a timeless transcendence.
