Handwoven by a local weaver most likely belonging to a Christian-dominated enclave within the Karabagh (Black Garden) region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, this carpet depicts a wildly colourful composition of flowers in full bloom set against a black background. Often referred to as gol firangi by the weavers, a label that literally translated to 'flowers for the foreigner', these carpets were extremely popular in the West, particularly Europe, at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The top left side of the carpet includes a date (1896) and the initials of the weaver who is believed to have woven it in English and Cyrillic. The central field of flowers is surrounded by three borders containing scrolling vines and additional flowers.
