KHOTAN SAMARKAND CARPET - EAST TURKESTAN

Circa 1920s
Approx. 6ft 10in x 4ft 10in (208.3 x 147.3 cms)

An unusual color palatte of light green and yellow hues, with a beautiful abrash this is a unique tribal carpet from Khotan. The sparsely decorated central field comprises of two large stepped diamonds representing the pomegrante inside which is a lattice work enclosing a cross. The borders incorporate a variety of geometric patterns in an open style. The simplicity of color and form is the most appealing factor of this carpet.
Samarkand in the past was a place on the silk trade route and was the rug collection center, and this name is now given to the carpets woven in Khotan, Kashgar and Yashgar, all towns in East Turkestan
