George Ashdown Audsley (1838 - 1925)

The Practical Decorator and Ornamentist for the Use of Architects, Practical Painters, Decorators, and Designers

Glasgow: Blackie & Son, Ltd, 1892

i-ix + 10-36 pp. 2 lettered and 100 numbered chromolithographs by Maurice Ashdown Audsley (some enhanced with gilt, plates 18, 22 and 56 are missing), accompanied by 100 descriptive notices; folio of blue boards with four flaps and gilt cover lettering.
16.8 x 12 x 2.4 in (42 x 30 x 6 cm)

Published for subscribers, this beautiful volume is a great practical manual on Victorian design, with plates large enough to directly reproduce as stencils. Audsley's selection of Greek, Renaissance, Medieval, Oriental and Gothic patterns and motifs definitely reflects the influence of Ruskin and the Arts and Crafts movement in the 19th Century.
