Zakkir Hussain was born in 1970 and grew up in the coastal Indian village of Chandiroor, just outside Kochi in Kerala. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts (painting) from the Trivandrum College of Fine Arts, and then completed his Master’s degree in Graphics from the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda.
The artist’s mixed media works on paper and canvas offer viewers a colourful and fantasy-like take on the bond between humans and nature, and are bestowed with a sense of exuberance and dynamism through the artist’s incorporation of a variety of images and influences.
While his earlier works explore deeper ecological and imaginary links with subdued tones, and consist of primary, dominating metamorphosis-like creations set against calmer backgrounds, Hussain’s more recent works are quite the opposite. Not only are they more realistic, but he has made them deliberately aggressive to evoke various personal thought processes in the viewer. These works project a mixture of chaos and colour, and seek to engage with all the senses. The artist’s images come from the visual news media, objects, shops, streets, and smells.
Hussain has won multiple awards for his work, including the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award for drawing in 2001, and the State Award from the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi in 2000. He has had many successful solo exhibitions in India and abroad including '103o C Yellow Fever and other Works' at Gallery Ske, Bangalore, in 2010; Krinzinger Projekte at Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, in 2008; 'Re-turn of the Unholy' at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; and 'Open Studio' a two-month residency and exhibition at Navaratna Apartment, Bangalore, in 2003.
