Born in Mumbai, India Vinita Agarwal, was brought up in Hong Kong and moved to England a decade ago. She graduated with a preliminary degree in French and German from UCL, followed by a Masters in Communication Design and Photography from Central Saint Martins.
For Vinita, the visual functions as a tool to strive towards heightening one’s awareness, and the ways in which we perceive our world. She uses the visual to educate, liberate and transform viewpoints as opposed to stereotyping them. To her, there is much to appreciate from diversity; be it economic, religious, ethnic or linguistic – and it is from this very approach that her work stems from.
Her most renowned work has been on Indian dance. Her series titled ‘Rhythm and Light in Indian Dance’ focused on how the harmony created by body, movement and music formed an aesthetic visual whole, crossing multiple dimensions of space and Indian heritage. The slowing down of movement in these photographs allowed a more intricate relationship between viewer and image.
Following this, branching into the territories of story-telling and photo journalism she embarked on a tour of Rajasthan by car, documenting characters such as famous Rajasthani dancer Queen Harish in the desert, to the camel farms in Bikaner and most recently covered most of North India in a photography workshop with former UN photographer John Isaac. The photographs depict a journey, and capture moments of time, caught between music and heritage of a beautiful culture that she feels close to and will continue to capture in time to come.
Vinita lives and works in London.
