Born 1981 in Hyderabad, Varunika Saraf studied at the Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts
University (JNTU College of Fine Arts) in Hyderabad, where she received a BFA in Painting. She later received an MFA in Painting from the University of Hyderabad, and a Masters in Philosophy from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Saraf’s art is informed by a range of traditions and techniques, including miniature and European painting. Her practice straddles painting, calligraphy, collage and textile art, and raises questions on the hegemony of the fine and applied arts, the concept of “woman’s work”, and the differing approaches of the East and the West to the arts.
The artist has showcased her work both in India and abroad. Among her recent group exhibitions are ‘Touched by Bhupen’ at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai, in 2013; ‘Phantoms of Asia’ at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, USA, in 2012; ‘Fabular Bodies: New Narratives in the Art of the Miniature’ at the Coomaraswamy Hall, Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai, in 2011; ‘Unfaithfully Yours’ at Gallery SKE, Bangalore, in 2009; ‘Reading Paint’ at Gallery Soulflower, Bangkok, in 2007, among many others. Solo exhibitions include ‘The Chair in the Cloud’ at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai, in 2010; and ‘Tales of our Times’ at Kashi Art Gallery, Kochi, in 2008.
Saraf was awarded the Kashi Award for Visual Arts in 2006, and has been the recipient of several grants and fellowships. In 2012, she received a grant from the Summer Research Academy, Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; and received the Charles Wallace India Trust Visiting Fellowship from the Centre of South Asian Studies, Cambridge. She has also participated in a number of seminars since 2009.
The artist lives and works in New Delhi, where she is currently pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Dr. Kavita Singh at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
