Born in 1895, Ustad Allah Bux is considered to be one of the pioneering artists of modern landscape and figurative works from early Pakistan. Bux was active in producing work in British India prior to partition, and later in Pakistan, post-partition.
Bux largely worked with oil paintings on canvas, but was also an expert with other mediums such as tempera, watercolour, and pen and ink. Much of his work carried depictions from Persian and Hindu mythology, and he is also credited with his depictions of rural life and cultures of Pakistan. Bux was known for painting in the Western Academic style, albeit one that placed native subject matter and features within the framework of the Western pictorial technique.
He was the recipient of the ‘Pride of Performance’ award in 1963, and some of his post-independence work was acquired by the National Art Gallery in Islamabad.
The artist passed away in Pakistan on 18 October 1978.
