Sunil Gupta, an artist, curator, writer and cultural activist, was born in Delhi, India, in 1953. After living in Canada with his family in the late 1960s, he moved to England in the late 1970s to study photography at the West Surrey College of Art & Design. He earned an MA in photography at the Royal College of Art in London in 1983. In 1989, he co-founded Autograph: the Association of Black Photographers, and set up the Organisation for Visual Arts (OVA) in 1992 to promote a greater understanding of culturally diverse practices in the visual arts.
His work has appeared in several international exhibitions, including ‘HORN PLEASE: The Narrative in Contemporary Indian Art’, Kunstmuseum, Bern, 2007; ‘Public Places/Private Spaces: Contemporary Photography and Video Art in India’, The Newark Museum, Newark, 2007; ‘Street and Studio: An Urban History of Photography’, Tate Modern, London, 2008; and ‘Modern India’, IVAM, Valencia, Spain, 2009. Curatorial projects include ‘An Economy of Signs’, The Photographers’ Gallery, London, 1988;
‘Sometime/s’, Johannesburg Biennale, 1995; and ‘Click: Contemporary Indian Photography’, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2007. His latest book, Queer Sunil Gupta, was published by Prestel/Vadehra Art Gallery in March 2011. His most recent art project, “Sun City”, about a gay Indian man in a Parisian bathhouse, was commissioned and exhibited by the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in May 2011 as part of their “Paris-Delhi-Bombay...” exhibition. Gupta currently lives and works between Delhi and London.
