At first glance, the colourful floral patterns in Suhasini Kejriwal’s work seem pleasant, simple renderings. The artist works with painstaking detail, using intricate patterns and painted lines that might even be called decorative. On a closer examination, however, one encounters several elements amidst the leaves and flowers that shock the viewer and disrupt the balance of the entire work of art.
Executed in mixed media on canvas or in painted and decorated fiberglass, the artist’s work is an interesting amalgamation of the straightforward and the quirky. A crocodile eye peeping dangerously out of a seemingly passive bed of flowers heightens the drama of a composition. Kejriwal’s work also shows how several disparate parts often come together to form an incoherent whole, and yet how meaning exists only in the juxtaposing of these elements.
Born in 1973, Kejriwal completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Parsons School of Design, New York, in 1998, a Post-Graduate Diploma from Goldsmith's College, London, in 1999; and then a Master’s degree in Fine Art at the same institution in 2006. Amongst her solo exhibitions are ‘An Advertisement for Heaven or Hell’ at Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai, in 2009; ‘The Garden of Un-Earthly Delights’ at the Anokhi Museum, Jaipur, in 2009; and at Nature Morte , New Delhi, in 2005; Gallery Ske, Bangalore, in 2003-04 and 2002; and Chitrakoot Gallery, Kolkata, in 1998. Kejriwal has also been a part of several group shows including ‘All that’s Solid Melts into Air’ at Indar Pasricha Fine Art, London, in 2006; ‘Inverted Tree’, Gallery Threshold, New Delhi, in 2005; and ‘Anthology of Art’ at Groupis – Bau Berlin in 2004.
