Satadru Sovan Banduri is a painter and video artist from New Delhi, whose work focuses on the restricted sexuality and latent fantasizing that he feels is endemic to his native India. His works also highlights the way in which “Consumerism consumes people’s individuality and turns them into larger than life entities…”
The artist started working with digital media a few years ago, while it was still a new and unexplored genre in India. A Fulbright Research Scholar who is affiliated with the Digital Arts and New Media Master’s degree program at the University of California Santa Cruz, Banduri is interested in bringing digital art and new media back to India. He is immensely fascinated by information technology and the digital revolution.
“Life in a Metro like Delhi and all its conceivable aspects from mobile SMS lingo to branded designer wear for men are inspiration and subject-matter for my work. The viewer would come across men and women immaculately attired in designer labels juggling professional and personal lives. Men and women who are genderless sometimes but assert their sexuality the very next moment,” says the artist (As quoted in http://metrospection.blogspot.com, accessed November, 2008).
A student of Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, Banduri began his career while still enrolled at the institution. Working as an independent artist since then, he has participated in several regional, national and international art shows. His recent solo shows include 'SMS...Buzin Sensation' at Nitanjali Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; 'Digital Age' at the Taj Palace Hotel, Mumbai, in 2006; 'IT [email protected]' at Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2004; Affordable An-kunst at Galerie Muller and Plate, Munich, in 2004; and Zeitgenossische Kunst aus Indien at Galerie Muller and Plate, Munich, also in 2004. His most recent group shows include 'Freshly Squeezed: The Young Indian Contemporaries' at Suchitrra Arts, Mumbai, in 2008; 'Spatial Symphonies' at Travancore House, New Delhi, in 2007; 'Flowery Fantasies' at Travancore House, New Delhi, also in 2007; and Art Internationalism at the Art and Design Show, The Grand, New Delhi, in 2006.
