Born in 1960, Safdar Shamee was brought up in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree, specializing in Fine Arts from Ujjain`s Vikram University. He has exhibited his paintings in shows both in India and abroad in countries like Saudi Arabia, Norway, Scotland and England.
Safdar`s approach to painting displays a primitive quality, and in the human heads he seems fascinated with, we see this influence acting quite clearly. Mask-like and monochromatic, these faces reflect the various emotions that he sees everyday in a very simple and clear fashion. There are no facades and lies these faces can hide behind. Ironic in the sense that they look like masks, but really depict what lies beneath the masks all humans tend to adopt.
The artist prefers to work with acrylics on canvas, and generally confines himself only to shades of brown. These shades mirror the colours he was surrounded by in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, where he was raised. The people he occasionally paints, the clothes they wear and the objects that surround them, as well as the many faces, are also reflective of his hometown and the arts and crafts native to that region.
Safdar Shamee is one of India`s most distinctive contemporary figurative artists. He has been part of various group shows and has held solo shows at the Arab Heritage Art Gallery in Al Khobar, the Kalidas Academy in Ujjain and the Sophia Duchesne Gallery and Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.
