Talking about her collection of works, Rachel Immanuel says, “I am a graphic artist, in awe of our visual culture. I like to make collages of old and new visuals to make new meaning. Most of the time life is never straight forward, and the compounded and complex meaning we make out of reading a multitude of things can be very interesting. I am also a visual communication designer now and then. My life is full of phases I cannot stick to one single way or method of thinking or being. It is more like a kitty party of mad hatters all put in one. I like to keep a diary of all the funny things I think about, see and associate; and sometimes it comes out in my work.”
Immanuel’s compositions are hard to miss. The push and pull caused by the jet-black of the print against the stark white background, confuses the perspective, causing the viewer to become more intrigued by it.
“There are many complexities in our intellectual world, but for me, this mishmash of a world we live in reveals itself very dearly, excitingly, dangerously and experientially. Never a moment of stability, it is beautiful.
“These works are from the series “PLEASE FOOT DOWN”, as that’s what “freedom” is about. We all love freedom, and never think more than twice if the actions and doings affect others freedom, from city-scapes, to society, class systems and decisions,” explains Immanuel.
Immanuel completed her Professional Diploma in Art and Design from Shrishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, in 2006. In 2008 she participated in ‘Please foot down’, Group show held in “Zorba the Buddha”, Global arts village, New Delhi.
Rachel Immanuel lives and works in New Delhi.
