Artist Preeti Sood’s collage-like, mixed media compositions embody collectively the dynamics she shares with India, her country of birth and Great Britain, the country she now lives in. She also draws on the “similarities and contradictions” between the two capital cities of Delhi and London.
Referring to her collection, Sood says “My practice explores memory, time and space within an urban landscape in the context of India where I was born and educated. When I moved to Great Britain from India, I was impressed by similarities and contradictions between the two distinct capital city spaces, Delhi and London.
“This initiated an exploration of my sense of displacement felt in the transition of moving between cities and cultures. Differences were explored through the medium of print and during this process I discovered the simplicity of creating my innermost feelings.
My starting point is the distressed ephemera of urban streets. I am fascinated by how these multi layer images decay and recombine in unexpected and seemingly random ways.”
Born in 1978, Sood received her BFA (Graphics/Printmaking) from the Government College of Arts, Chandigarh, in 2000. In 2002 she received her MFA (Graphics/Printmaking) from Kala Bhawan, Santiniketan and in 2008 she completed her Masters in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art, London.
In 2007 she held her first solo show, ‘Cartographs Within’, Exhibited at Arushi Art Gallery, New Delhi. Her recent group shows include British International Mini Print Exhibition, London Print Studio, London, UK, Touring to various galleries around the UK, in 2009; The Postcards show 2008, Nottingham UK, in 2008; Southwark Faces, Photography, Dulwich Picture Gallery, in 2008; ‘27 Artists 10 Countries’, Printmaking and other art, Denbies Wine estate, Dorking, Surrey, in 2008; and ‘CLICK!
