The deep intensity shown in his subject’s eyes, animal or human, blatantly displays their discontent. The fiery red colour that often fills up the background in Mishra’s canvases, adds to the defiant nature of his content.
Born in 1977 in Tumsar, Maharashtra, Mishra completed his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the Sir J.J. School of Art in 2002, followed by his Master’s degree from the same institution, in 2004. After his graduation, Mishra was selected for the residency program at Khoj, New Delhi, in the same year.

Various forms of flora and fauna populate several of your works; burdened animals and blossoming potted plants appear repeatedly. Can you elaborate on your choice of imagery?
The intention is to make the presence of fellow beings, which are part of our day to day lives, felt. For me, it’s not a question of who serves who, but the relationships between us all and how each of us shares our life with other fellow beings including plants and animals. We do carry on as an individual self’s, but it’s these relationships and similarities which allow us to live.
Another subject you often turn to in your work is infancy. However, while most of us associate childhood with happiness, your subjects are thoughtful, somber and sometimes even fearful. Who are these children? What is it about their lives that you would like to share with the viewer?
Life is about germinating and cultivating, and there's a happiness one achieves in giving birth and caring for a new born. The children I had portrayed relate with respect to human existence, which is scary at times. It’s not the ‘war’ one fights, but the desire to invade others spaces, forgetting the responsibility of ‘the birth’ one has given.
Even though the content of your paintings appears to be serious, your palette is bold and vibrant. What are you conveying through your choice of colours?
The palette of my paintings comes in relation to ‘the being’ I am portraying. Colours are just the medium to express emotions (which involves all the shades of colour one can imagine).
You have worked in several media. Does your subject influence the medium you use or is it an intuitive choice?
My choice of mediums comes from 'the availability and the knowledge of the medium', with relation to what I am portraying.
