Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 in Switzerland by two Polish émigrés, and initially named Patek, Czapek & Company. After Francois Czapek left the firm in 1845, Antoine Norbert de Patek joined with the French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe, who went on to become the inventor of their famous stem-winding mechanism. In 1851, when Philippe became a full-fledged partner in the firm, he lent his name to the company and Patek Philippe was born. Amongst the firm’s other innovations are the first keyless watch, the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar, and some of the most complicated watches in the world. Many of these innovative pieces, dating from the 16th century onwards, are showcased at the Patek Philippe museum in Geneva. The company is presently managed by the Stern family, who acquired it in 1932.
