Mandakini was born in 1984, in Jalandhar, Punjab. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Fine arts from the Delhi College of Art in 2007. Following this, Mandakini pursued her further studies in the United Kingdom - a diploma in Photography from the London College of Communication in 2009, and a Master's degree in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University in 2010.
Mandakini is primarily an artist of the digital medium. In the past she has worked with low fidelity equipment like broken DV tapes and cheap handycams. Her current practice, however, is photography and photo processes. She engages with photography in an urban context, where the street is her playground for images. Her works are deeply personal portraits from the street and the untold drama which the street constantly produces. Documenting graffiti in and around urban centers is one area which Mandakini has begun to pursue with a serious intent after witnessing a sudden burgeoning of graffiti in New Delhi.
Her works have been a part of many group shows in India and abroad, including the cities of Nottingham and London.
