Maximilien Luce was born in Paris on in 1858. As a youth, he apprenticed to become an engraver and completed a number of illustrations for French newspapers and magazines. Additionally, he took an evening course to deepen his knowledge in the field.
In 1879, Luce was enlisted for military service, first deployed in Brittany and then in Paris, where he continued with his career as an engraver. It was during his military service that Luce met Charles Emile Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), the renowned French painter and sculptor, whose students included John Singer Sargent (1856-1928). Luce entered Carolus-Duran’s studio, giving him the opportunity to train as a draughtsman, and also introducing him to leading painters of the time, such as Camille Pissarro (1830-1903).
Along with Pissarro, Georges Seurat (1859-1891) and Paul Signac (1863-1935), Luce was one of the founders of the Neo-Impressionist School, also known as the Pointillists. For many years Luce adhered to the Divisionist technique of colour separation, and theories of the scientists Michel Chevreul, Charles Henry and Ogden Rood.
In 1887, Luce joined the Société des Indépendants, following which he consistently participated in the avant-garde group’s exhibitions. Though landscapes made up most of his oeuvre, people going about their daily life also featured in his canvases, unlike most other painters working in this style.
After 1920, Luce moved away from the strict tenets of Pointillism, and began painting in a freer style. In 1935, he was made President of the Société des Artistes Indépendants.
Maximilien Luce died in Paris on February 6, 1941.
