Gustave Loiseau was born in Paris in 1865. His parents were butchers and reluctantly agreed to their son’s choice of a career in art, placing him as an apprentice with an interior decorator. Loiseau worked as an interior decorator for a brief period of time, before beginning his career as a painter in 1887 by settling in Montmartre.
Though he lived amongst several well known artists in Montmartre, Loiseau found he had little in common with them, and enrolled at the Ecole des arts Décoratifs in 1888, where he followed courses in life-drawing that he felt he needed to advance in his artistic aspirations. After spending about a year there, he began training under Fernand Just Quignon (1854-1941), a landscape painter. The experience of painting landscapes in the studio, however, was not acceptable to Loiseau as he believed that the canvas should be painted based on direct observations of the subject and favoured painting en plein air (in the open air).
In 1890, the artist moved to Pont Aven, where he completed several landscape paintings that showed close affiliations with the Impressionist style. Loiseau’s canvases are known for their subtle use of colour, and delicacy of brushwork. His works were exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1891 and 1892, where they were well received, and soon after he found a dealer to represent him.
The artist passed away in Paris in 1935.
