Henri Lebasque was born on September 25, 1865, in Champigné, France. He initially studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Angers, and then in 1886 he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and then under the supervision of Léon Bonnat.
It was in Paris that Lebasque met Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir, both of whose oeuvres deeply influenced his work. Other artists who inspired Lebasque were the artists of Les Nabis, Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, and the pointillists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
In Paris, Lebasque participated in several group exhibitions at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1903, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon d’Automne, which he co-founded with Henri Matisse and others. Over the following years he worked closely with Matisse and other artists like Raoul Dufy, Georges Rouault and Henri Manguin who exhibited at this Salon.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the artist lived in Lagny, which along with its surroundings he represented in many paintings of the period. He also freequently travelled to the South of France, visiting destinations that Manguin suggested. One of his favourite places, this region inspired the artist to use brighter and lighter colours in his paintings, bringing a fundamental change to his body of work. In the following years, Lebasque also worked and traveled in Normandy, Brittany and Vendée and also in Saint Tropez, Saint Maxime, Nice and Cannet.
Besides representing the landscapes and people that surrounded him, Lebasque also gained commercial success as a designer, working on the decoration of the Champs- Elysées theatre and the transatlantic liner, ‘Paris’. In the last period of his life, Lebasque focused on the depiction of nudes, which seemed to emanate light and tenderness.
Lebasque died in August 1937 at Le Cannet. In 1957, the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice organized the first retrospective of his work.
