Speaking about her work, Krupa Makhija notes, "‘Form’ has always been important to me. Many Indian aestheticians have emphasized that Indian philosophy is inevitably expressed either in ‘metaphoric’ or ‘symbolic’ language. Likewise the ‘object’ or ‘form’ in still-life is not a simple component that caters the need of ‘formalism’. The ‘object’ is a ‘curious’ element in art. It not only acts as a structure but is also used as visual vocabulary for artistic language. It has been my humble attempt to introduce symbolic language through my paintings. My endeavour is to observe nuance of symbolic language in still-life genre. The broader survey has inspired me evidentially to study the strategy/ ideology of making/ creating the consumption of ‘object’ in visual space.

"I had been trying to create strong images of selected objects. To my mind in painting visual enjoyment is more important rather than it’s literary qualities. Vessels used were having images of textural nature along with sub-images within the object itself. It was mostly one single object with proper placement in regard to light and shade so that the painting may not require more objects. The tendency to depict textures in my work is a very important element of my painting. The arrangement of light and shade is such that objects drawn appear to be coming out of darkness to light especially in my prints. I also have a tendency to repeat the object with varying outlooks.

"Of late, an object has become a form to me. I have no inclination to copy the object as it is. It has undergone a lot of ‘transformation’. Because of such transformation the meaning of the object has also changed. It has now led to abstraction even though the form is retained. The form is also accompanied by the ‘abstract urban space’. The composition now has become ‘mystic’ and unusual.

"It can be said that my work is based on print–making qualities. Woodcut techniques had been my fascination from the very beginning. Initially I used to take wood prints of grains of wood using acrylic colour on canvas and then thereafter I used to work on the top of that printed surface. As a result the canvas used to appear full of printmaking values. I had also used screen printing (serigraphy) in some of my works. Techniques of print-making have always been one of the chief characteristics of my work."

Born in Gujarat in 1983, Makhija received her Bachelor's and Master's degress in Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda. The most recent exhibitions in which her work has been featured include, ‘The Triumph of Suburbia' at Hirji Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; ‘Freshly Squeezed’ at Suchitrra Arts Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; and ‘See You Again’ at Osmosis Gallery, Mumbai, the same year. In 2009, the artist was honoured with the 51st National Award in Painting from the Lalit Kala Akademi, and in 2008 she won the Harmony Excellence Award for Emerging Artist of the Year.
