Born in 1971 in Sidapur, Karnataka, Kiran Subbaiah completed his Bachelor’s degree in sculpture from Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, in 1992. He then went on to complete two Master’s degrees, also in sculpture, the first from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, in 1994, and the second from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1999.
Kiran Subbaiah works in several genres including photography, video, sculpture and installation. However, all his art works initiate and share an interesting camaraderie with his audiences, arousing in them both interest and suspicion. These conversational works have both assumptions and expectations of their interlocutors, challenging them to take part in the art they would otherwise only give a passing glance.
Kiran Subbaiah solo shows include ‘Sleepwalker Daydream (Part I & II) at Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai, in 2009; ‘Shhhhh!’ at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore, in 2002; ‘Hello I am...’ at Kent Institute of Art & Design, Canterbury, in 1999; ‘Revised Lessons in Taking and Giving’ at Images Gallery, Bangalore, in 1997; and ‘Confronting Gift-wrapped Curses’ at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, in 1996. Amongst the recent group exhibitions in which his works have been featured are ‘Caturday is Cleaning Day’ at the Loft, Mumbai, in 2009; ‘The View from Elsewhere’ at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, in 2009; ‘India (1899-2008)’ at La Casa Encendida, Madrid, in 2009; ‘On Certainty’ at Bose Pacia, New York, in 2009; ‘Indian Highway’ at the Serpentine Gallery, London, and Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo, in 2008-09; ‘Chalo! India’ at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, in 2008-09; and ‘Still Moving Image’ at the Devi Foundation, New Delhi, in 2008.
