A talented Baroda based ceramist and potter,Jyotsana Bhatt moved to Baroda from Mumbai in 1958 to learn sculpture under Sankho Chaudhuri. It is here that she discovered her interest in making three-dimensional figures, while anything flat did not evoke any interest. Jyotsana joined the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda for a formal degree. "Training at Baroda enhanced my sense of form, texture and color," she says.
Her ceramic works includes images of cats and dogs,The clay toys are very distinctive, each separate from the other, each having a distinguished identity of its own. She says, "I hate repeating my forms which is why I don't like to go commercial. Making identical sets would bore me,"
The dome of a wheel is one of her favorite forms She says, "it is so round, so serious and sensuous." When the dome, made of clay, is partially dry, she cuts it, etches on it, joins it together and makes a design. There is a method in her work, every piece is first conceptualized ,visualized and then executed
Since 1985, Jyotsana has been working as a Reader at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University Baroda. She married Jyoti Bhatt and accompanied him to New York. While there she learnt copper enameling at a private studio.
Jyotsana says she values smoothness and contours of her work. She uses ornamental devices like striation, floral meandering lines that resembles the curve of tapestries, or the white lace of lines that appear on mud huts and floor and wall paintings. She says, "I use colors and textures I have obtained through judicious accidents or emergent from a long and attentive practice."
Jyotsana Bhatt lives and works in Baroda
