Jaishri Abichandani was born in Bombay, but moved to New York when she was fifteen. In 1991, she received her Bachelor’s degree from Queens College, City University of New York. Almost a decade later, she moved to London, where she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Goldsmiths College in 2003, before going on to complete a Master’s degree there in 2005.
Abichandani’s varied background provides nodal reference points for her work, which subtly mixes social and political activism with art. She has successfully used her art time and again to make bold statements for a cause – the wellbeing and rights of South Asian women – often challenging stereotypes and looking for innovative ways to represent the minority. Working closely with gender related issues, including abuse, startling objects make their way into Abichandani’s art. Abichandani’s art practice, however, is not expressly bound to her foundation, the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective, and also explores the politics of the city-state, and the interactions between global and local.
Abichandani’s art moves fluidly across genres and styles including photography, painting, video and installation art. Frequently, the artist appropriates images from the internet, from news media or from popular culture, and reinvents them, creating new images that evoke questions about war, foreign policy, and heroic survival.
Abichandani has had numerous solo shows some of which include 'Reconciliations' at Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore, in 2008; 'Bijli: Heart of a Drag Queen’ at Kran Film Collective Space, Brussels, in 2008; 'Signs of the Times’ at Williams College, Massachusetts, in 2007; and ‘The Enchanted Life of…’ at Nature Morte, New Delhi, in 2004. Her works have also been featured in group shows like 'Have We Moved Away From What’s Hotter Than Curry Yet?' at Gallery OED, Kochi; 'Gender and Performativity’ at the Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum, Egypt; 'Indian Popular Culture, and Beyond’ at Sala Alcalá, Madrid; and 'Artists in Exile’ at Arario Gallery, New York, all in 2009. Her other group shows include 'Everywhere is War (and Rumors of War)’ at Bodhi Art, Mumbai, in 2008; 'Global Honking Ground’ at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, in 2008; 'Hobby Horse’ at Avanthay Contemporary, Zurich, in 2007; 'The Love Show’ at Hans Weiss New Space Art Gallery, Connecticut, in 2006; ‘The Crystal Land’ at Al Jira Center for Contemporary Art, New Jersey, in 2004; and ‘Only Skin Deep: A National Survey’ at the International Center for Photography, New York, in 2003.
In 2002, Abichandani was an invited artist at the 2nd Biennial of Cape Town’s Month of Photography; and in 2006, she was awarded the Urban Artist's Initiative Prize, New York.
The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
