“I favour the poetic over the dogmatic, complexity over simplicity.”
- Huma Mulji
Pakistani artist Huma Mulji explores the conflict between tradition and modernity, history and contemporary society through mixed-media sculpture-often featuring taxidermy animals and toys-installations, photographs, drawings, and paintings. Her works, which focus on the themes of displacement, migration, borders and cultural interchange in a globalised context, are often imbued with deliberate humour and clever witticism.
Born in Karachi in 1970, Mulji completed her BFA (Sculpture and Printmaking) from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 1995, and MFA (New Media Arts) from TransartInstitut, Berlin, accredited by Donau-UniversitatKrems, Austria, in 2010. She has held solo exhibitions in Mumbai, Lahore and Dubai, and has been part of several group exhibitions in India, Pakistan, UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Italy, and more. In 2012, Mulji’s work was part of London’s Frieze Art Fair and the Hong Kong International Art Fair. She was invited to participate in the Pakistan Pavilion, titled Desperately Seeking Paradise, in the 2008 edition of Art Dubai, and continue to exhibit in the 2009 and 2011 editions as well.
The artist lives in Lahore, and teaches at the School of Visual Arts and Design at Beaconhouse National University.
