David Hockney was born on 9 July, 1937, in Bradford, Yorkshire, where he initially studied at the Bradford School of Art. After completing two year of National Service, Hockney enrolled at the Royal College of Art in London in 1959, where he met the American artist R.B. Kitaj, and was introduced to the works of artists like Francis Bacon, Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake.
During his time at the Royal College, Hockney showed his work along with Blake’s at the exhibition ‘Young Contemporaries’, and became associated with the British Pop Art movement. However, the artist’s enduring interest in Cubism and Expressionism are also evident in his body of work. In 1963, the artist met the dealer John Kasmin, who has represented his work since. The same year, he made his first trip to New York, where he met artists like Andy Warhol.
Hockney’s body of work is largely personal and autobiographical, and among his most famous paintings are his large, vividly coloured photorealistic renderings of swimming pools in California, where he lived for several years. In 1967, one of these paintings was awarded the John Moores Prize at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Hockney also worked in other media, creating several prints, photo-collages or ‘joiners’, paper pulp works, and stage sets for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Royal Court Theatre, La Scala and the New York Metropolitan Opera.
Hockney’s first print, created in 1961, was titled ‘Myself and My Heroes’, in which he appears beside haloed figures of M.K. Gandhi and Walt Whitman, and his first major project in printmaking was a suite of sixteen etchings where he autobiographically represented William Hogarth’s series of paintings, ‘A Rake’s Progress’. Also in the 1960s, he created another series of prints titled ‘A Hollywood Collection’, with the printer Ken Tyler. Following Pablo Picasso’s death, Hockney made a series of prints in honour of the artist, who influenced him greatly, in 1973.
The artist’s first retrospective was held at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 1970. The same year, Hockney turned his attention to photography, and particularly photo-collages. Pasting several small photographic prints of a single subject together to create a composite image, he called these works ‘joiners’. In these works, each image is taken from a different angle and at a different time of the day, creating an overall effect similar to a Cubist painting.
In 1974, the filmmaker Jack Hazan released the autobiographical documentary on Hockney, titled ‘A Bigger Splash’, after one of the artist’s paintings, and two years later the artist published his autobiography, ‘David Hockney by David Hockney’. The second part of this autobiography, ‘That’s The Way I See It’, was published in 1993.
In 1985, Hockney was commissioned to create works using Quantel Paintbox, a computer program allowing him to paint on the monitor. This project was quite successful that was recorded and broadcast on the BBC. After experimenting with photocopiers and fax machines, in 2009 Hockney extended this dialogue between artistic creation and technology by painting several works using the Brushes application on the Apple iPhone and iPad. These works have been exhibited at La Fondation Pierre Bergé, Paris, and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.
In 2006, the National Portrait Gallery in London held a large scale exhibition of Hockney’s figurative work, spanning more than fifty years, and in 2008, the artist donated his largest painting, titled ‘Bigger Trees Near Water’ and measuring fifteen by forty feet, to the Tate Gallery there. In 2012, the Royal Academy opened a retrospective of the artist’s work, including more than 150 pieces from across his career.
Although he refused a knighthood in 1990, Hockney was made a Companion of Honour by the Queen in 1997, and given the Order of Merit in 2012. In 2003, he received an honorary degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, as well as the Lorenzo de Medici Lifetime Award at the Florence Biennale.
